NEW! Supercharging worked examples using variation and self-explanation

How can we make our worked examples even more effective using the power of variation and self-explanation?

Course overview

In this course we try to answer two questions:

1. How can we help focus our students’ attention on the critical features of a novel idea when doing a worked example?
2. How can we help what they attend to stick?

In other words... how can we supercharge our worked examples?

In our quest for the answer we use key principles from Variation Theory and research into the Self-Explanation Effect to devise a simple, practical, effective way to improve our worked examples for any mathematical concept immediately in the classroom whatever our preferred teaching style may be.

  • This course builds upon to ideas introduced in my worked examples and intelligent practice courses, but takes them much further using new research I have discovered.
  • This course can be completed on your own, with a colleague, or as a department*.
  • It is suitable for secondary school teachers (teaching students age 11 to 16) and also primary teachers teaching Years 5 and 6 (9 to ll year olds).
